About Pennoyer

Pennoyer School proudly educates children from parts of Norridge, Harwood Heights, and unincorporated Norwood Park Township. During the 1830's, the Pennoyer family came from new England and settled in what is now known as Norridge. The land they settled laid between what is now East River Road and Cumberland Avenue. In 1838, members of the community met at the home of John Pennoyer to discuss the plans for the development of a school. The school began in 1839, in Pennoyer's home. In 1954 it was decided to build a new school at the corner of Cumberland and Foster Avenue. A major addition was added in 2001. The school district proudly educates children in grades PK-8.

Getting ready for I LOVE READING WEEK next month!

Pennoyer School’s…

“I Love Reading Week”

Pennoyer’s I Love Reading Week  will kick off on Monday, April 15th, correlating with National Library Week.  Here’s what is planned…

Monday, April 15th “Open the Door to Reading”

Students and teachers will decorate their classroom door as a book (side facing the hallway).  Start discussing ideas with your students now.  Choose a book, decide on what materials you will need. Classrooms can start transforming their doors on Monday, April 15th.  Have your classroom door ready for viewing by 8:10 a.m. on Thursday, April 18th .

Tuesday, April 16th “Read In! BINGO”

Each class will schedule a time during the school day to play “Read In! BINGO”. Each  student will be given a blank BINGO sheet.  Each teacher will have a master list of possible authors and titles.  From this list, each student will select 24 choices and write each one in one of their game card squares. (The center square, of course, is a FREE space.)  The teacher will draw choices from a hat.  As an author or title is called, each student will cross it off if it appears on their BINGO card. If you’d like, permit students to bring in popcorn to munch on during the game.  The first student to win from each class will receive a Dairy Queen Treat!  Please give the name of your first BINGO winner to Mrs. Leveille.  Treat Day to be determined.  BINGO sheets for students and the master list of possible authors and titles will be placed in teachers’ mailboxes on Friday, April 12th.  This might be a fun reading buddy activity.

Wednesday, April 17th “Dress up as your favorite book character!”

Students and teachers may come to school dressed as their favorite book character.  Each student should bring the book that illustrates their character. Face paint and hair dyes may be used if the costume warrants either. Please keep in mind that the students must be able to tolerate the costume for the entire day. Students can dress as characters from books they enjoyed when they were younger or characters from books they currently enjoy. Costumes must be appropriate for school.  Students may also want to dress as a group of characters from a book.

Thursday, April 18th “Reader’s Theater” – We want you!

Grades 5th – 8th will gather in the gym at 9 a.m. to view a special Reader’s Theater entitled, Peddler Polly and the Story Stealer, by Aaron Shepard.

Pre-K – 4th grade will gather in the gym at 12:45 to view a special Reader’s Theater entitled, Which Shoes Do You Choose?, by Aaron Shepard.

For those faculty and staff who enjoy “hamming it up” a bit, this is for you. We will need volunteers from the faculty and staff to perform in both of Aaron Shepard’s Reader’s Theaters.  We won’t practice too much.  The mistakes when reading the scripts and the easy atmosphere that surrounds these informal plays make them hilarious!

See Mrs. Leveille if interested in joining the cast!  It will be good for a laugh!

A selected group of students will set the stage for each of our Reader’s Theaters by reciting the poem, Count on Reading, by Joanie Welch.

Friday, April 19th“Book Walk”

Now that the classroom doors are completed, at some point in the day, take your class for a “Book Walk” around Pennoyer School.  A sign-up sheet for walking time slots will be posted in the lounge on Friday, April 12th.  Please sign-up for a time slot to avoid congenstion in the hallways.

Photo Ops! ~ The newspaper will be out to take some pictures during the week.

Say, “Cheese.” J
